Future Developments Sector Space

Q. STO has now reached the 1 year mark and the universe has only expanded by smaller 2 sectors. Posters and players have expressed an interest in seeing an expansion to sector space within the Federation areas. What is Cryptic’s plan for the expansion of sector space, and what time frame could that be within?

A. After recently updating the look and feel of Sector Space, the next step is to add more variety and random events as you flying throughout the galaxy. This includes updating Deep Space Encounters and adding more random “star cluster”-like missions to the regular sector maps.

Before we start expanding outward from our existing zones, we also have some gaps that we want to fill with content such as the gap between the Pi Canis and Psi Velorum sectors. You can look for these changes to happen after our Season 4 release.

Most of the new sectors we plan to add will happen in Season 5 and later. There may be some sectors that will be added along with a Feature Episode series before then.

Q. Many players are fans of the Deep Space Nine and Voyager series, and would like to explore many of the places that the Captains did. Cryptic has also discussed the desire to revamp the exploration system. Dan Stahl has also mentioned in forum posts about wanting to open the Gamma Quadrant. Is there a possibility this year we could see the Gamma and (or) Delta Quadrants open?

A: One of the upcoming Feature Episode series will be based around Deep Space 9 and we intend to have several of the missions take place in locations seen on that show. This could mean venturing into the Gamma Quadrant, or going to some of the planets seen during the Dominion War. Look for this series to start in the Fall.

Q. The Klingon sectors are very small but are continuing to improve in content and how far a Klingon can travel. Will the Klingons gain new sectors of their own in addition to being able to go into more of the Federation player sectors?

A. As part of our next major update, Season 4, we will be opening up nearly all of the sectors for Klingon players to travel in. In addition, we are looking at KDF specific missions that will take place in these opened up sectors so that the Klingon Faction have content to play in these newly opened up sectors.

Q. It has been stated that Cryptic is working on a way to being able to open sector space so that there are less loading screens and a more open feel. Is a more open space something we will see within the next couple of seasons?

A. We have a long term goal of going to a large open galaxy with as little map transitions as possible. In the meantime, we are looking at ways to speed up loading times and improve the experience as you travel between sectors of the galaxy.

Q. The current galaxy map only contains a small portion of the Alpha Quadrant. As Star Trek Online expands and grows would Cryptic entertain an eventual redesign of the galaxy map to better suit a larger environment and how would something like that be implemented?

A. While we don’t anticipate making the sectors any larger in the short term, if we did need to add in some more Alpha Quadrant locations we will consider whether or not the new systems can be added to existing sectors or whether or not we needed to change the scale of our in game star system so that it doesn’t feel overcrowded.

I like to see in the Future something like the internal of the docking cargo with procedure to take off from there and choose delta flyer or regular shuttles.
Just like your in the interior of your ship
and walk to engineering ,
Do that and choose a shuttle to take off.

While Cryptic may have made the mistake of releasing too soon, that was a year ago, and the game has come a very long way since launch..

Think about it.. WoW makes over a billion dollars a year, and it still doesn't have viable voice-chat..

Features and content don't just make themselves, Cryptic works with a small team and doesn't have a big buget to play with.. Cryptic also in some ways have their hands tied by CBS, but it would be unprofessional for Stahl to say anything about it..

The modding community has already jumped at the map editing Foundry tools. Theres been so much extra content generated in the last 3 weeks its not even funny.. The game is flying

Quoting tomast:
this is what you end up with when your dev team is smaller than a starbucks crew. typical cryptic product, they talk the talk and charge the sub of a AAA MMO, but deliver a game that never should have left beta. Yes they are slowly improving the game, but every step forward usually introduces two steps backwards. More time is spent on dress up clothes in the C-store than anything else.

I truly believe they are trying to force out what little of the pvp community is left. It took them 6 months to get a rudimentary queue system in place. The only devs seen in the pvp forum are either handing out infractions or is a content-related dev who plays in their off-time.

With how much money people have pumped into this game, and continue to pump in under the bs ruse of the c-store funding more development, cryptic owes its player base a helluva lot more.

So true and right on the mark, hell iam surprised that someone hasn't tried to do what people have done to WoW in putting it on there own servers. Modders could have done a better job, frankly iam sick to death of the C-store crap, that is all it is.

I really dont understand any negative comments on this game. I just came back after a 6 month break and the game has a completly new feel. I am very excited and happy with the direction cryptic has gone, and i think with season 4 we will see a much more balanced facton relationship.. Anyone who bad talks this mmo and hasnt tried it out again and played through all the new episodes up to the most recent has no room to talk.. mmo's evolve and no game is perfect outa the gate anymore. What you need to hope for is a dev team who gets in and continues to move forward, and ive seen more strides by cryptic to make this happen with cmmunication and features then any other developer out there..

Wow. alot of hostility. I am new to MMORPG so i dont know how much other franchises interact with the players but I have found that dstahl has been quite forthcoming with info. He regularly tweets ideas. I would personally find it hard to maintain a positive attitude creating stuff if I was being criticized all the time. It is bad for morale Well done to the STO team for getting on with it. This game has given me a new appreciation for Star Trek and the guys and girls making foundry missions you really have created trek well done.

Quoting Ardvark of truth:
The problem facing STO is not the design team or even the mods they are doing a good job. However they are limited by the wording of their IP contract Star Trek is a franchise owned by CBS every piece of data be it missions, ships or uniforms HAS to be approved by CBS first and they can take their time responding with either a yes or no. This is something the nay sayers need to consider b4 flaming Cryptic.

I have thought that same thing, however that can only work for so long and holds no water at all.

CBS and Atari may put the nail in the coffin of what used to be a great franchise. Cryptic itself was never up to the task of delivering a good Star Trek title. They mostly do mediocre.

Cryptic as a company has programmers with no creativity, they bite off more than they can chew on a regular basis. If you look at their company info they tell you that they are cut rate by saying they will bring a game on budget and on time. This means being sloppy and being short on substance. Most good/great titles tend to go over budget and get delayed often.

In the last year STO players have been paying for the title being polished and finished when that should have been done during development.

Ive been reading comments from Facebook, to STO official Forums and people are being nasty.

Iam not surprised, this is just another interview that confirms what we already know, they are going to just leave it to its own demise.

Two things need to happen, either the modders need to come in and clean up the mess that Cryptic Fucked up, or someone needs to find a way to simply pull the game to there own server, so we can make STO into what it should have been, instead of a half ass attempt while falling short.

It's the usual with these interviews, none of the questions are really answered. I wonder if DStahl has been a politician, he sure sounds like one when he answers questions...

What a yawn fest, answers everything without really answering anything..

Typical Cryptic side stepping..

And again no questions about the many bugs in game ??

While the interview isn't bad, there is some good stuff overall in it but i remain skeptical of what is to come. I wonder if it has anything to do with the update coming on the Engine itself, is why Dan is being so vague on things.

It is rather frustrating to hear what Dan has stated, it seems as if the developers are either limited in which they can and cant do, or the engine is simply to limited. STO has become too repetitive and nothing is going to change by the outlook of what has been said in this interview, good hard pointing questions that were simply not answered or simply fluffed off!

Perhaps it is time for Modders to take over, they could do what needs to be done.
