Whenever a new MMORPG comes out, a conversation can’t go by without a mention By: S. Murphy Whenever a new MMORPG comes out, a conversation can’t go by without a mention of whether WoW will topple or be toppled by this new MMORPG. Yes, every other game that has had to deal with nonstop WoW comparisons, though what is it with Rift that the WoW community feels like they need to lash out at those that apparently have run to Rift and left World of Warcraft? A little competition isn't so bad, and those that are defending WoW, I understand, but in all reality WoW isn’t going anywhere and Blizzard's devs have even given their best wishes to other titles, which is rather awesome to see from the top contender in the MMORPG titles. As well, I see no correlation whatsoever in the years WoW has had to polish itself, the neutrality of this opinion piece, and the longevity of WoW. Both my comment and the opinion piece are not saying that "WoW is done," as you so described, but rather that "WoW's decline is inevitable," it's illogical to take such points out of proportion and try to use them to justify inadequacy in writing.
And beyond this, guess what: MMOs on release are far from perfect, WoW was no different. It's because WoW has had years to polish that comparisons to new MMOs can be made. The opposite isn't really justified until RIFT has had equally many years under its belt. That said, for release, the polish of RIFT is a perfectly valid claim to bring up.
On a lighter tone, this article does not claim RIFT as the "WoW-killer," but rather a foreshadowing of what is to come. The concluding sentence makes it quite clear that RIFT won't end WoW, but with MMOs such as Tera, GW2, and TOR (which I myself am highly anticipating as well), we very well may see the inevitable decline of WoW sooner rather than later.
Rifts PVP is also another "done wrong" part of there game have you tried fighting in a warfront that has more then 2 healers? YOU WILL LOSE even before the saboteur setup got nerfed you could not 1v1 a healer at all or even 2v1 a healer. Oh and dungeons ok now theirs 4 classes seriously you will always have to compete every dungeon for a item drop even if your own class is in the group playing the healer and your the DPS. Atleast in wow with multiple classes of the same armor class they had differences such as hunter mail vs caster shaman mail or druid leather vs rogue leather(yes some classes will still take from each other but at-least its not EVERYTIME)
WoW has also had years to get it right compared to rift but if your going to sit there and say its so polished then you need to make your review more neutral instead of OMGS WOW IS DONEEEE YAAAAAY. I've already seen quiet amount of people from my shard go back to wow already from my guild but I will not be one of them, i am just going to wait on SWTOR and hope its more enjoyable
I tried rift but i felt i was playing wow with a different graphics.
All they did was copy wow and make some changes. That's not too innovative.
Maybe if they make it free for a year or so.
I played for about two weeks in open beta, and it felt like the glory days of leveling my first character in WoW again. The level of polish was unbelievable. The storyline was compelling, with beautiful cinematics, the content felt expansive, and, best of all, the music could only be rivaled by WoW.
A lot of people complain, very often mind you, of MMOs being WoW clones. However, as I've said before, these comments are rather baseless, because you don't see nearly as many people complaining the Battlefield, Call of Duty, and Medal of Honor games are all clones.Because they're not, they're FPSs,and, as such, they share similar elements. The elements that people claim RIFT and other MMOs "copy" from WoW are actually just like this, core elements of an MMO, and it's just WoW is the most successful MMO to implement the majority of these elements successfully.
That being said, there are also several other reasons I believe can be attributed to RIFT's success. First off, having played WoW for 3 years, I can honestly say that by the time WotLK was rolling around, nothing new and innovative was coming out of Blizzard.Sure, they add more raids, ten more levels, another battleground or two, and oh snap,a new class, but the core mechanics have remained the same, the same game with a new wrapper. This is where RIFT is different. Not only does it implement many successful elements of MMOs present in WoW,but it brings many unique elements to the table. The specialization system utilizing three souls is ingenious and offers a ridiculous amount of customization, without forcing "cookie-cutter" specs that emerged in WoW. Furthermore, the world events (rifts and invasions) do wonders in immersing the players and getting them to interact with other players. Sure, MMOs like Warhammer Online were some of the first to implement "community quests," however RIFT does it flawlessly, something which does wonders in making the player feel like they are a part of something larger.
Frankly, I'm one of those people that would tell WoW players "boohoo, get over it." WoW's days are numbered, and not only because of Blizzard's new MMO in development (despite them saying they'll continue to support WoW), but because of new MMOs that are getting the ingredients right like RIFT. I have no doubt that the release of Tera, GW2, and especially SWTOR, will do a lot in starting to crumble the cookie that is World of Warcraft.
