The comparisons between Battlefield Heroes and Team Fortress 2 are inevitable, but ultimately skin deep. While both cartoon-styled, class-based shooters are by their natures susceptible to the nerf/buff cycles that define MMOs, Heroes’ systems are appreciably more complex. Where WoW’s influence on TF2 stopped at the avatar silhouettes, Heroes went straight for the hotbar’s jugular, and inherited all the RPG arcana that comes along with it. As a result, it will probably have a more challenging time when it comes to balance. But needless to say, that isn’t a bad thing.
EA could have easily mailed in its foray into the "free-to-play" space. But the more you learn about Battlefield Heroes, the more evident it becomes that the former most-conservative-publisher-in-the-world has arrived at some big ideas about one of the possible futures of PC gaming, and is willing to bet on them.
