For those of you unaware of its existence, LittleBigPlanet is a PS3-exclusive title that allows you to create your own physics-based games within a huge online community (sort of like Garry’s Mod, except platform-based), and is being developed by Media Molecule. MM has revealed that they were, prior to LittleBigPlanet, developing a game described as "more Portally than Portal" and "Portal, but with scale factor." The developers had even met with Valve Software who had suggested they develop a Portal game together.
As an interesting aside, before pitching Sony, the ex-Lionhead company founders were working on a game "more Portally than Portal... Portal, but with scale factor", we’re told. They went on to meet with Valve, which published Rag Doll Kung Fu on Steam. At the time, Valve also suggested that they work on a game together, but nothing came of that in the end. "We were very tempted," Evans reveals. "But in the end we decided to talk to Sony and they just got the game at the beginning."
Media Molecule is no stranger to Valve and Steam. One of the Steam Store’s first games (that wasn’t developed by Valve) is Rag Doll Kung Fu, another physics game developed in platform style that was developed by Media Molecule co-creator Mark Healey. We can only imagine what Portal would have been like had Healey teamed up!
