The ESA has confirmed to GameDaily BIZ that both Activision and Vivendi are actually no longer with the ESA. "While the Entertainment Software Association remains the preeminent voice for U.S. computer and video game publishers, we can confirm that Activision and Vivendi Games opted to discontinue their membership. The ESA remains dedicated to advancing our industry’s objectives such as protecting intellectual property, preserving First Amendment rights, and fostering a beneficial environment for the entire industry. Our high level of service and value to members and the larger industry remains unchanged," said Rich Taylor, Senior Vice President of Communications and Research, ESA.
Original story:
Gaming Nexus has reported that Activision will not be displaying its products at E3 2008. The publisher of the Guitar Hero and Call of Duty series will still be holding a separate press event on the first night of the conference.
"After careful consideration, for business reasons Activision has decided not to participate in any official E3 activities," read a statement by Activision to Gaming Nexus. "We wish the ESA best of luck with the show."
According to Joystiq, other publishers currently MIA for E3 2008 are Blizzard/Sierra, Atlus, Majesco, NCsoft and WBIE. [Update 2: Apparently WBIE actually will be attending. A rep told us, "There seems to be some sort of incomplete list circulating, but we are a member of the ESA and will have a presence at E3." Furthermore, Bethesda, id Software, Majesco, and D3Publisher will be attending, but Atlus and NCsoft will not.]
