Ubisoft 2007 Sales Jump 36% To $1.46 Billion

Developer and publisher Ubisoft has announced its full year financial report, with sales rising 36 percent to 928 million euros ($1.46 billion), and a holiday quarter up 10 percent to 217 million euros ($340.5 million) on strong sales of Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Assassin’s Creed.

Full year sales were up from 680 million euros the year prior, and fourth quarter sales from 197 million euros, a stronger showing than the company’s expected 165 million euro fourth quarter.

Freshly revealed, profit for 2007-08 totaled 109.8 million euros, up from 40.5 million euros in the previous year.

Apart from Rainbow Six and Assassin’s Creed, Ubisoft says games under its more casual Games For Everyone brand also contributed to the outperforming quarter, with 230 million euros ($361 million) in sales for the titles in its full year.

Looking ahead, Ubisoft says it expects sales of 154 million euros ($241.7 million) in its first quarter of 2008, and is maintaining its full year sales target of 1 billion euros ($1.57 billion).

Said CEO Yves Guillemot, "2007-08 was a remarkable year for Ubisoft, underpinned by three strategic achievements: Continued strengthening of existing franchises such as Rainbow Six, Rayman, The Settlers and Ghost Recon which recorded excellent sales levels. The sharp ramp-up of the ’Games For Everyone’ casual range, whose sales figures tripled over the year. A steady output of new releases with Assassin’s Creed and Imagine that have performed exceptionally well."

"These strategic focuses will once again be the key to our success in 2008," he continued, "which is set to be another record year for the industry with growth expected to reach at least 15%. Ubisoft’s games line-up is particularly strong, with no fewer than seven existing franchises, five new releases and new brands in the casual segment."

Bethesda, Splash Damage Announce Development Partnership

Developer and publisher Bethesda Softworks has announced a long-term development partnership with London-based studio Splash Damage. This follows Bethesda’s February announcement that it had established a new London-based subsidiary for publishing its titles throughout the UK and other EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) territories.

Splash Damage has been recognized by the industry with several awards for its multiplayer first-person shooter titles, such as Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. The British developer announced in February that it would be doubleing its staff in anticipation of a new and unannounced multiplatform title currently in development.

Based in Rockville, Maryland, Bethesda Softworks is best known for its work on The Elder Scrolls series. Its next title, Fallout 3, a post-apocalyptic action RPG for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, is scheduled to release in fall 2008.

Said Bethesda Softworks president Vlatko Andonov: “This could not be a more perfect fit. We are extremely impressed with Splash Damage and the quality titles they produce. They are highly creative and innovative, and have demonstrated a high level of dedication to their projects. We are confident that gamers everywhere will be thrilled with the offerings from this collaboration.”

GameStop Sales Up 42% In Record $1.8 Billion Q1

GameStop’s string of record quarterly results has continued in its first quarter, with GTA IV, Smash Bros. and Mario Kart pushing sales up 42 percent to $1.8 billion, and profits up 151 percent to $62.1 million.

GameStop reported that new game software sales were up an "amazing" 72 percent, with comparable store sales up 27.1 percent in the first quarter. New game hardware made up 18.7 percent of sales at $339 million, new game software making up 43.7 percent at $792.8 million, and used games making up 22.9 percent at $415.7 million.

Five days of GTA IV sales, Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart for Wii, Ubisoft’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 and EA’s Army of Two were reported as the retailer’s top quarterly sellers.

CEO R. Richard Fontaine said in a release that 210 stores were opened during the first quarter, moving the company closer to its goal of opening 550 and 600 new stores in 2008. "With half of the new stores opening outside of the U.S., our international store base will grow by 25 percent and our overall global market share will continue to increase,” he added.

Looking forward, GameStop has said it expects comparable store sales to grow from 12 to 14 percent in its second quarter, and between 10-12 percent for the full fiscal year. The retailer also expects "strong tie ratios, significant industry investment, and a great title line-up will drive new video game software sales to double digit growth resulting in higher profitability for the company."

Said Fontaine, “We are very bullish on the future as three major metrics are transforming the business and accelerating the potential for GameStop growth. The installed base of video game consoles grew 34% in 2007, or nearly 31 million units, the highest incremental growth in the history of the business, and we are forecasting that hardware unit sell-thru will match these levels in 2008."

"Behind the huge hardware growth is the fact that the demographic for video gaming is expanding dramatically as industry figures indicate that 38% of game players are female. Finally, we have an outstanding line-up of new games coming during the rest of the year, including Nintendo’s Wii Fit, Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 4, Microsoft’s Gears of War 2, and Activision’s Guitar Hero 4," he concluded.

EA Expands Mobile Division With Acquisition, Taito Deal

Electronic Arts has announced that it has agreed to acquire the assets of developer and publisher Hands-On Mobile Korea, a subsidiary of San Francisco-based Hands-On Mobile, intending to rename the studio EA Mobile Korea. EA hopes to strengthen its EA Mobile Asia development and publishing growth plans with the acquisition.

Established in 2001, Hands-On Mobile develops and distributes mobile content to more than 200 of the world’s leading operators in 60 countries. Hands-On Mobile Korea is best known for its mobile role-playing game, Heroes Lore. Current CEO Gilbert Kim will continue to head the studio after its EA Mobile Korea transition.

Said EA Mobile senior vice president and general manager Barry Cottle: "This acquisition is a major milestone in growing our mobile business in Asia. Hands-On Mobile Korea brings us a great leadership team, proven studio talent, and outstanding carrier and OEM handset manufacturer relationships."

Hands-On Mobile Korea’s acquisition follows Electronic Arts’ announcement earlier this week that the company has signed an agreement with Taito Corporation granting exclusive distribution and licensing rights for Taito’s entire catalog to EA Mobile for mobile devices across Europe.

The agreement assigns rights across all existing mobile channels and mobile devices, as well as developing new channels and platforms such as smart phones. The first Taito games to be distributed under this new agreement with EA Mobile include Cooking Mama, Space Invaders, Arkanoid, Bubble Bobble, Puzzle Bobble, and Rainbow Islands among others.

Said EA Mobile vice president of European publishing Javier Ferreira: “Taito has produced some of the all time games classics – such as Space Invaders, Puzzle Bobble, and Arkanoid - as well as innovating with new titles such as Cooking Mama. This deal gives EA Mobile immediate access to an incredibly popular catalogue on existing devices while offering us the opportunity to bring these titles to new mobile platforms.”
